HUB FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE HAWAII ALL-STAR FOOTBALL CLASSIC

Double header features 138 of Hawaii’s top players

HONOLULU – Hawaii’s high school football will attract national attention thanks to an inaugural All-Star football game Friday, December 12 at Aloha Stadium. The Hawaii Union Builders (HUB) Foundation will present the Hawaii All-Star Football Classic in conjunction with Sportslink, a sports-marketing and management company that produces and oversees many high school all-star sporting events. This double header features two games, the Senior Bowl Goodwill Classic at 5 p.m. and the Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl at 8 p.m.

“This is an exciting opportunity for some of the best high school prospects from Hawaii, American Samoa and the continental United States to gain national exposure,” said Mayor Mufi Hannemann. “We hope to build on the HUB Foundation’s annual goodwill game that highlights Oahu’s top football players. We expect the long-standing Senior Bowl Goodwill Classic, coupled with the new Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, to bring national attention to the state of Hawaii’s best of the best and showcase players of Polynesian ancestry.”

“We approached Mayor Hannemann about hosting an All-Star football game, because Hawaii has one of the best football cultures in the world, a true warrior mentality, and continually produces top football talent. The state isn’t recognized like a Texas, California or Georgia, but deserves more of the spotlight,”” said Rich McGuinness, President of Sportslink. “We’re grateful for the Mayor’s leadership in bringing together this All-Star Classic and for the cooperative support of HUB Foundation Chair Herbert Kaopua and Hawaii High School Athletic Association Executive Director Keith Amemiya.”

Mayor Hannemann, McGuinness, Kaopua and Amemiya today announced some of the event details during a news conference at Honolulu Hale.

The first game, the Senior Bowl Goodwill Classic, now in its 18^th year, is Oahu’s premier annual football event that features many of the best OIA and ILH high school seniors. This exciting game offers 100 Oahu players a chance to showcase their talents to visiting college recruiters, raises funds for local high schools and provides scholarships to college-bound athletes.

The new competition, the Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, will follow at 8 p.m. and highlight 40 of the nation’s top prep football players competing against a Hawaii team comprised of 38 players from across the State, three players from American Samoa, and nine mainland players with Hawaii ties. The games will be held in partnership with SportsLink, producer of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl held annually in January in the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas, and Football University (FBU).

The Hawaii/Polynesia head coach will be Wendell Say, Aiea High School football coach.

HUB Foundation and Sportslink will release the full rosters of all four teams and the coaching staff closer to the event.

Pre-sale tickets are $5 for students (K-12) and seniors (65+), and $10 for adults and available at the Aloha Stadium box office starting November 18. Tickets are also available online through www.etickethawaii.com ($2 surcharge applies). Fans can also buy tickets the day of the game; $10 for students (K-12) and seniors (65+), and $15 for adults.

In addition to the double header, the weekend will include many activities and events including a coaching clinic, youth combine, Football University mini-camp, and many cultural festivities. Football University, a national, invitation-only technical training camp for elite-level youth and prep players, will return to Hawaii in March when it brings the camp to Honolulu as part of the 2009 FBU Tour.

SportsLink, which started in 2000, is a sports-marketing and management company that produces and oversees many sporting events and properties, including the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and Football University. The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is the nation’s premier high school football game, featuring the best 90 players in a classic East vs. West match-up. Football University is an invitation-only camp for elite-level youth and prep players focusing on teaching technique and skill in small groups. The instruction is performed by former NFL players and coaches who come from the NFL ranks. FBU’s quarterback instructors have privately trained Tom Brady, Tony Romo and Matt Ryan, the top quarterback in the 2008 NFL Draft. FBU traveled to 18 cities last year and will travel to 32 this year. It will come to Hawaii for the first time this March.
