The Lady Tigers have dominated the regular season in the
OIA White Division for girls volleyball this year.  Facing a taller
Waipahu team, Mckinley seems to be riding the wave of momentum into
next week??s playoffs as they took care of Waipahu in 2 games, 25-20,
25-20, at McKinley??s Student Council Gymnasium.

This was the final regular season match for both teams
as the seniors for Mckinley- Noreen Cabuyaban, Naisha Kekumu-Credo,
Naleo Luis-Mateo, Crystal Tafai, Pearly Togiai, and Tehani Hill.  This
was a bitter sweet moment for Hill who entered the season as the top
hitter.  But she injured her ACL during the first week of practice and
only this week was cleared to play, although without jumping.  She came
and served in game 2.

In
game 1 Mckinley built a 12-8 lead after an ace by setter Crystal
Tafai.  The Lady Marauders then began to make things
interesting.  After an exchange of points, three consecutive ace
serves by setter Cardin Sugue tied things up at 13 all.  A **** by
Kelsey Viliamu, combined with a Tiger hitting error, gave Waipahu a
lead at 16-15.

That lead would be short-lived.

The Lady Tigers regained the lead with some assistance
from a couple of double contacts by Waipahu.  An ace by Juri Franzen
made it 20-16.  The game would end with stellar play on defense and
offense by Pearly Togiai.  First, a block made it 24-20.  Then, a
perfectly executed back slide **** off the set of Tafai to end game 1.

Togiai would finish with 3 kills and 4 blocks to lead her team.

Game 2 would see Mckinley blaze out to a 10-1 lead as
they served tough which made it difficult for the Marauder passers.
Waipahu did battle back.  Kawehi Doo, a 5-3 outside hitter, began to
connect on some attacks, as did middle blocker Shanice Julio, to cut
the Tiger lead to 19-14.

Similar to game 1, Mckinley then pulled away to win.

For Waipahu, Doo finished with 4 kills.  Julio and June Fanene each added 2 kills.

Waipahu must await the outcome of the Kalaheo versus
Anuenue match.  Both Kalaheo and Waipahu were tied for the fourth and
final OIA playoff spot.

The OIA Playoffs begin October 16 to include the inaugural Blue Division, JV, and Red Division.
